A Funny Thing Happened On the Way Here
Today, I'm at the Executive Forum's "Leadership In Private Capital Markets" conference here in New York. Several keynotes from various financial kingpins are lined up and we've already heard some interesting perspectives on bubbles, valuations, and investment trends throughout the capital spectrum.
I'll have more of a debrief later. I've just stuck my head above water to see how the Bernanke pre-game is shaking out.
My reading list:
Ben S. Bernanke urged Congress last week to reduce the federal deficit, cut government spending and make the Bush administration's recent tax cuts permanent.
AP: Bernanke to Face Senate Banking Committee
Some lawmakers said they'll look for assurances that Bernanke will retain the political independence that is crucial for the Fed's credibility with central bankers and financial markets around the world.
Stocks were narrowly mixed at the open Tuesday as traders had a full plate, taking in economic data on inflation and consumer spending but still awaiting the Senate confirmation hearing of Federal Reserve nominee Ben Bernanke.
If Ben Bernanke wants a long tenure as Federal Reserve chairman, he should hope for a short confirmation hearing before the Senate Banking Committee today.
Of the eight U.S. central bank chiefs who had confirmation hearings, the five whose appearances lasted less than four hours went on to serve at least eight years. The rest didn't last three years.
Go get 'em, Ben.
