New Yorkers Do It Underground

With New York City's MTA/Transport Workers Union labor dispute still chugging along, Gotham Gazette has put out a study of various demographics of both transit workers and transit riders.

One striking finding is the disparity between the typical New Yorker's commuting preference and that of the average urban commuter elsewhere in the U.S.  While a third of NYC's workforce relies on the subway system (and more than 44% patronize the MTA when you include bus riders), this is not the typical experience of our city-dwelling brethren outside the Big Apple.

Nationwide, fewer than 1 in 40 "workers in areas with central cities" take a subway or elevated train to work.

So if negotiations continue to fail and the TWU decides to saddle us with another illegal strike, don't go looking to friends and family in other cities for sympathy. Odds are overwhelmingly likely that they'll suggest you simply drive yourself to work.  They may also take the opportunity to compare their town's pizza (or steak, cheesecake, hot dogs, etc.) to yours, complain that you refer to New York as "the city", or make a crack about accents and/or smells.

Also of interest in the Gazette study is the fact that within New York City, public transit workers as a group make use of the subways and buses less frequently than the workforce on the whole.

Maybe they know something we don't.
