Ho. Ly. Crud.
Perfectly awesome. Talk about your barnstormers.
Really, other than a sitting Congresswoman assaulting a federal policeman, I can't think of a huger political news story occurring during my lifetime. I don't throw around the word "bombshell" casually, but I think it probably applies in this case.
I'm truly nonplussed.
Let's all take a deep breath and break this down. Details are still sketchy and not entirely consistent, and various rumors are quickly building upon speculation built on conjecture, but as best as I can tell from the most trustworthy of Beltway and NYC sources, this is how today's whirlwind is working out.
- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) has served Bubba with divorce papers in Chappaqua, NY.
- Sen. Joe Lieberman (?-CT) has filed for a change of party affiliation with the State of Connecticut's Board of Elections (presumably to Republican).
- Hillary has officially declared candidacy for President in 2008 (*gasp* we're shocked, Hill).
- While Hillary has not declared a running mate, Lieberman has declared he intends to accept any such offer.
From an empirical perspective, it's a near deathwish to run for President from an active Senate seat, but is there any data on a mixed doubles, mixed party ticket? This breaks all the rules. Add to the mix the single mother angle and we may as well tear up our health insurance cards right now. Johnny, tell the American people what they've won!
One's a carpetbagging pseudocentrist with a penchant for socialism...
One's a party-hopping actual centrist with a conscience and a longing for national stature...
Let's begin the media firestorm. Forget immigration. Forget the economy. Forget national security. Forget Cynthia "Rock'em Sock'em" McKinney.
Sorry, *actual issues*, but these two jokers are going to steal every last headline from now until Election Day.
