Former Speaker Hastert Will Endorse Romney
So says The Politico:
Sources inside former Gov. Mitt Romney's camp tell The Politico that they've picked up yet another major Washington endorsement: former House Speaker Dennis Hastert. The Illinoisan is set to publicly endorse Romney today.
Romney has cultivated the congressional wing of the GOP in an effort to cast himself as the consensus alternative to Sen. John McCain. Although the former Speaker is now just a rank-and-file member of the House, his support of Romney is a strong indicator of where much of the anti-McCain Republican establishment is headed.
As assured as I am that McCain can't win the nomination, the more Romney can cement his identity as the alternative to the "frontrunner", the more I believe he sews it up. In the mean time, the longer McCain can be left in the hot seat, the less time Romney has to spend there, a significant plus given the extra-early start to this cycle's campaign.
