45th Consecutive Month of Job Growth

Three months after the 2003 investment income tax cuts were signed into law, the United States began a streak of monthly job creation that has gone unbroken ever since.  According to the Labor Department, the economy added 157,000 jobs in May, bringing the 45-month total to more than 8 million.  The unemployment rate held steady at 4.5%.  If the Bush economy stays in the black for three more months, it will hold the record for longest period of American job creation in recorded history.

Clinton topped out at 33 months, the peak of the tech bubble, during which the economy added nearly 9 million jobs (2 million of which disappeared after the bubble burst, before employment started trending upward again).

The current longevity record is co-held by Reagan and Bush 41, who saw 48 months of non-stop job creation from mid-1986 to mid-1990.  It's worth noting that 1986 was also the year Reagan introduced his sweeping tax cuts.

Republican primary voters note:  John McCain was one of only three GOP Senators to vote against the 2003 cuts.
