Ray Nagin Disgusted By Apathy Of Others, Apathetic Toward Own
The Mayor of Chocolate City is currently repulsed by his subjects.
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin recently pronounced himself "disgusted" with apathy among city residents, saying it was "unacceptable" that only about a quarter of registered voters bothered to cast a ballot in the Oct. 20 primary.
...
In a television appearance earlier this month, Nagin said he was disheartened that so many people appear to have lost interest in civic life."It was kind of offensive to me, because here I am busting my butt every day and all I'm asking citizens to do is to plug into the democratic process," Nagin said, exhorting his fellow New Orleanians to do better on Nov. 17.
Marring the credibility of Nagin's indignation, however, is the fact that he apparently can't be bothered to get to the polls either.
Nagin did not vote in the October primary, or in two citywide elections in March and May, according to Secretary of State Jay Dardenne's office.
...
Berry said the secretary of state's office is still collecting data from the Nov. 17 runoff, so he couldn't say whether Nagin voted in that race.
Naked hypocrisy notwithstanding, Nagin's moral authority on the matter is narrowly preserved, thanks to a poignant synopsis of the Civil Rights Movement.
While noting that the apathy appeared to cut across all social, racial and economic lines, Nagin reminded African-Americans in particular of the struggles their ancestors endured for the right to vote.
"People were bit by dogs and, you know, fire hoses and all that," he said. "So everybody, please go out and vote."

Durn voter apathy, I am shocked I tell you shocked. Sit down read the figures if the right side voters or ones like them ever registered and actually voted instead of posted on blogs in the comment sections and said "I want this" there would never be a question of how did we get there from here. People get up off your duff and do the right thing, nice concept but expect it not to transpire.Posted by: JustADude | Nov 27, 2007 11:32:23 AM
Voter appathy is a huge problem nationwide. In our recent city council election less than 10% of the registered voters went to the polls. People must think we are on auto-pilot. Will they vote if they feel their way of life is threatened? What will it take? It is very sad. I wish I knew the answer.Posted by: Terri | Nov 27, 2007 11:57:56 AM

Terri I would have to go back and check but even in 2004 and 2000 we had like somewhere like 3 million or more vote in Florida out of a 30 million population. Which means the voting age group should have hit 19 or 20 in a heartbeat. All those sideliners are why the politicians only have to talk to the 504 or so real careful who swing the vote. Add in tripple or quadrupple or 10 times the number of active voters who do the job at there end and sooner or later politicians will have to talk to you not at you. Amazing how that works.Posted by: JustADude | Nov 27, 2007 2:26:22 PM
Want to totally make a politician sit and $hit. Dont send him a pi$$ed off letter, just watch the terror if you up voter registration by 30 or 40 percent. Now that will scare the $hit out of them.Posted by: JustADude | Nov 27, 2007 2:34:42 PM
Up it by 200% or 500% and you will suddenly have some one who talks on the Senate floor like he is God talking to God. It really works like that.Posted by: JustADude | Nov 27, 2007 2:40:05 PM
120 people show up at a political gathering and the politician talks at them. Bring in 10,000 wanting to hear what their positions are on the issues of the day and bring out the Depends..someone is going to need them real quick.Posted by: JustADude | Nov 27, 2007 3:48:50 PM
Real simple add 230 thousand to a voter base where they won the last time by under 9 or 10 thousand and watch the worms squirm. You have the power but dam it all you aren't using it. VOTE it doesn't hurt, in fact it may do good. Now bumper sticker that and you've got something.Posted by: JustADude | Nov 27, 2007 4:03:13 PM
There are an estimated 44 million conservative voters who are probably going to sit on their hands and let Hillary walk into the White House with a one or two million margin. All I can say is WTF.Posted by: JustADude | Nov 27, 2007 4:10:54 PM
I will have to admit that I have spent most of the afternoon on a PaulBot thread over at another blog. Doing that warps your mind when you have to get back to real people.Posted by: JustADude | Nov 27, 2007 4:18:41 PM
Dude - I appreciate all the feedback, but please to watch the consecutive comment count. I understand you've got a lot to say, but if you take your time, concatenate your thoughts, and throw them up there manifesto style, it'll help ensure other people who want to comment don't get lost in the flood. Thanks!

hey, flip. LOVE the site. if the multiverse had a shred of justice, this'd be the #1 political blog. really. gotta question for you. would like to hear your take on it. i'm a standard-issue conservative WM, disgusted of course with the course the country is taking in - what appears to be - a scene-for-scene reshoot of the end days of the roman republic. every 4 years, bobo and bozo run for president; the next election the candidates are even - somehow - even WORSE. here's the question: for years now, mention "pol candidates" and 'trilateralists' or any of their ilk, and people roll their eyes. "not one of THEM". i thought so too. but. each year, no matter the party in power, the gov't grows. each year, the border becomes less defended. each year, it becomes clearer that the gov't will do as IT pleases, and the people be damned. etc etc. and, of course, pretty much every serious candidate for president is a trilateralist. is it possible the black helicopter crowd ISN'T crazy? whattaya think?Posted by: chiuninho | Nov 27, 2007 6:29:08 PM
Sorry Flip Sometimes I find short and sweet and many say more than a bunch at once. It was a cross over of the rapid fire from the OTHER thread I was on having a meeting of the minds with 50 or so Paul Bots.Posted by: JustADude | Nov 27, 2007 9:34:16 PM

It was a unique happening today in that they stood and fought instead of cut and run like they normally do. But durn it was a mental slaughter. A Bull Run of modern proportions.Posted by: JustADude | Nov 27, 2007 11:48:22 PM
