Spitzer Scraps Illegal Immigrant Voter Registration Plan

Hallelujah. (HT: JWF)

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has decided to abandon a plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, officials familiar with the decision told The Associated Press Tuesday night.

The governor is due to meet Wednesday morning with New York's congressional delegation, many of whom openly oppose the program. Debate over the issue also has spilled into New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign.

The governor's office signaled to New York lawmakers Tuesday that Spitzer will say at the meeting that he is shelving the plan and that immigration is a federal issue to be handled by Washington, according to congressional aides who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because no formal announcement had been made.

Maybe this rare Spitzerian backpedal had something to do with the rookie Governor's re-election support dropping to just 25% just a year after he was swept into office in a 69%:29% landslide.  Or maybe he just wants to spend more time explaining his status as Norman Hsu's highest-paid politician (with nearly three times as much direct funding as Senator Clinton).

Speaking of whom, I wonder whether Hillary still supports, doesn't support, supports the illegrant immigrant licensing plan, now that even its architect has abandoned it.

Update:  Allahpundit's called in the humpbot for a victory dance.

Update (11/14):  *Chortle*  This ought to get those poll numbers up.  Nice work, champ.  If there's one thing people like at Christmas, it's more taxes.

Update (11/14):  Along with this fraud-inducing, vote-grubbing bathwater, Spitzer may also have thrown out a viable baby.  From a press release put out today by 9/11 Families For a Secure America:

It's incredible. Governor Spitzer still doesn't get it.

Now he has broken his word to the Department of Homeland Security, and to every New Yorkers concerned about terrorism, by withdrawing his solemn commitment to enter New York into the Real ID program. It is another slap in the face to 9/11 family members working to keep driver's licenses out of terrorist hands.

Real ID is an express recommendation of the 9/11 Commission. It is specifically designed to prevent terrorists from obtaining this powerful identity card, the very document used by the 9/11 terrorists to plan and execute their attacks.

Err...where does it mention voter registration?

The voter registration is de facto - a foreseeable (if not deliberate) "motor voter" side effect to giving out hundreds of thousands of licenses, given that the burden is on the jurisdiction to find and throw fraudulent registrants off the rolls, not on the registrants to authenticate their eligibility. The rampant voter fraud owing to motor voter laws is well and widely documented, and this would've led to propagation of that fraud on a truly massive scale. Spitzer's been unambiguous about his guiding governing principle being not the welfare of his state, but the expansion of the Democratic Party's power over it. Once he caved to Chertoff's 3-tiered compromise (which would have greatly diminished the expected scale of the election fraud to follow), the plan suddenly lost support on the Left (having never had it on the Right). This was before Hillary publicly impaled herself on the issue during the debate, so it's a shame she didn't get that memo. Now Eliot's backed off it and she's left holding an unpleasant bag.

Your claim that such voter fraud is rampant, widespread and well-document is less than compelling. The US Supreme Court would agree, as they granted the Indiana case to be heard in the next session, as the Indiana legislature's claims constitute a similarly specious argument.

Well, it was less than compelling because I just claimed it. I didn't leave any pointers. My comment system is link-unfriendly, and I wouldn't have expected much disagreement about the prevalence of motor voter fraud. Shows what I know.

Here's Senate testimony from 2001 (8 years after motor voter was enacted) identifying some of the rampant fraud it had engendered.

New York Board of Elections spokesman Lee Daghlian says, "It would be [tough to catch] if someone wanted to . . . get a number of people registered who aren't citizens and went ahead and got them drivers' licenses..."

Miami's 1997 Mayoral election involved all kinds of absentee voter fraud (including voting by non-citizens, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement), which actually changed the outcome of the election. Among the factors contributing to recent election frauds, the FDLE specifically cites motor voter laws that "make it easier for possible fraud since once one is registered, the Motor Voter Laws also made absentee ballots available for any reason."

It only stands to reason that the no-questions-asked policies of motor voter would encourage fraud and you don't have to look very hard to find evidence of that.

Hillary is so confident in the outcome of the election she doesn't care how ridiculous she looks on this issue. Her handlers are telling her that this will pass. Spitzer has to be pissed, though. I wonder what is in it for him. There has to be a pay off in it for him somewhere. We will know it when we see it though.

Well Terri, it bears repeating that Spitzer is Hsu's highest paid politician (tied for 1st with NY AG Andrew Cuomo).

Flip, thanks for the reminder. I had forgotten those facts. Do you think that's the payoff? I was thinking something more dramatic but you maybe right. I will have to defer to your expertise.
