Waiter, There's a Bush Doctrine In My Messiah

WTF?

Democrat Barack Obama warned Wednesday about the danger of "fighting the last war" as he pledged to focus on emerging nuclear, biological and cyber threats if elected president.
...
He added, "The danger ... is that we are constantly fighting the last war, responding to the threats that have come to fruition, instead of staying one step ahead of the threats of the 21st century."

Say, Barry, that sounds an awful lot like an endorsement of the principle of waging preventive war against non-immediate, but gathering threats to national security.

In fairness to the Lightworker, he was referring not to preemption per se, but his strange fascination with surrendering our nation's nuclear defenses.  Preemptive self-disarmament, if you will, presumably followed by preemptive hugs, a preemptive light dinner (ravioli, ham, sundae bar...), and a humble request that other nuclear nations kindly follow suit.

Hope!

Your interpretation shows me that words can be used in place of inkblots in a kind of Rorschach test; meaning you are seeing what you want to see in those words. I will not pretend to read his mind, but the "fighting the last war" phase means to most of us that generals often plan based on tactics that would have worked in the past. It means no more than that. You interpret "staying one step ahead of the threats" as advocating preemptive war. I do not. I COULD mean maintaining good relations with those in the region so we can gather enough intelligence to prevent another attack. Preemptive war is morally wrong. Afghanistan was NOT a preemptive war. The Taliban controlled the country and provided safe harbor for bin Laden. Iraq had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks and there were no WMDs. Also, we've lost more Americans and spent more money in Iraq than we lost in the 9/11 attacks. From a moral and financial cost/benefit perspective, the Iraq war was unjustified. The sooner we get out, the sooner we bring down the budget deficit, strengthen the dollar, and resume growing the economy. For a people who claim to have Christian values, it seems many of us make repeated exceptions with 2 of the 7 deadly sins - thou shalt not kill, and, taking exception to the famous phase from the movie wall street, Greed is NOT Good.
